Charl joined Cilliers Attorneys™ as a law firm Partner in 2017, at the age of 33.  He created what is known today as one of best Shareholder, Director and Business Partner Dispute departments in South Africa. He has been appointed by many businesses of various calibre and size over the years, to deal with their internal disputes amongst its shareholders, directors or business partners. Some of Charl's matters have been reported in the South African Law Reports and he has seen his matters make their way to the Constitutional Court. Charl has travelled both nationally and internationally for these Shareholder, Director and Business Partner disputes. His ability to get to the heart of the issues has saved many businesses and business relationships. Charl has earned himself a formidable reputation as a top Shareholder, Director and Business Partner Dispute attorney. Frustrated and stressed shareholders, directors and business partners feel at ease with him and know that they are in good hands when they appoint Charl as their attorney to resolve their matters. He strives on maintaining long-term relationships for businesses and long-term relationships with his clients. Education 

LLB Degree (UJ)- Four Year Honours Degree

Completed the PVT (practical vocational training) in terms of the Legal Practice Act;

Completed competency-based examinations for admission as an attorney (board exams);

Admitted Attorney in South Africa;

Obtained Rights of Appearance in the High Court;

Completed the PMT (legal practice management course) required by the LPC, as a law firm owner.

Advanced Short Course in Business Rescue Practice (University of South Africa)

Charl has gained invaluable experience in shareholder, director and business partner disputes, commercial law (drafting of business agreements, structuring of businesses, managing the process of investigating and verifying a business - also known as due diligence), commercial litigation, corporate governance, business rescue and debt collection. 

2008 - 2016

  • Experienced gained in practical and strategic legal advice in corporate and commercial litigation matters.

  • Experienced gained in the National Credit Act 34 of 2005.

  • Experienced gained in the Companies Act 71 of 2008.

  • Experience gained in drafting of commercial agreements, commercial law, commercial litigation, corporate governance and business rescue.

  • Attended to obtaining various default and summary judgements at both the Johannesburg Hight Court and Pretoria High Court. Liaised with the Registrars of the High Court.

  • Attended to the taxing of bill of costs in front of the Taxing Master at both the Johannesburg High Court and Pretoria High Court

  • Attended to various claims at the High Court and managed the trials thereof from the drafting of the letter of demand, to the issuing of summons up to and including the final judgement and /or settlement at court.

2017 - current year

  • Charl was appointed as a Partner of Cilliers Attorneys™.
